The new Mazda MX-5 has won both the 2016 World Car of the Year Award and the World Car Design of the Year Award at the New York International Auto Show. It is the second time a Mazda has won the World Car Award, the first being the Mazda2 in 2008. This is the first time in the history of these awards that the same vehicle has won both titles.
This is the 12th year of the World Car of the Year Awards, which were established in 2004 by a group of automotive journalists. Years later, they added the Design of the Year Award to further recognize exceptional creativity and innovation in design. This year, the judging panel consists of 73 journalists from 23 countries who came together at the NYIAS to cast their votes.
Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro said he’s honored to receive the awards and sees it as proof of the youth of the brand and the car. The general manager of the Design Division agreed, saying Mazda aims to “bring cars to life” and “[refine] the beauty of its forms.”
